[Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol's cittern.]
Picture property of Kunsthistorisches Museum.
Here is a picture of the cittern built for the Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol by Girolamo di Virchi (father of Paolo Virchi) in Brescia, dated 1574.
[Cittern-head: the death of Lucretia.]
Picture property of Kunsthistorisches Museum.
This is a close-up of the "cittern head" which is a beautiful sculpture meant to portray the death of Lucretia. (Could there be a subtle joke that her suicide is portrayed in the tuning box?)
